The Residence of the German Ambassador in London is located in an impressive Grade I listed building originally design by George Basevi. It occupies a prominent corner plot on Belgrave Square and forms part of the Grosvenor Estate in West London. The formal state rooms of the Residence and its adjacent grounds are often the venue of significant cultural, political or social events.
The new German Embassy garden staircase has been commissioned to connect the Ambassador Residence’s generous terrace with the embassy garden five metres below. The staircase establishes a missing link and extends the outdoor space used for formal and informal festivities. While the colour and materials used for the staircase respond to historic precedents within this listed ensemble, the detailing of the connections, slenderness of side elevation as well as the contrast between exposed and lacquered stainless steel reveal its contemporary nature.
The German Embassy garden staircase has been designed in way to fully support off-site manufacturing. Split into sections: treads, risers, and balustrade were fabricated in a factory in West London; whilst the continuous 7.5m long stainless steel stringers were manufactured and imported from Germany. Carefully considered and discreet connection details ensured a speedy on-site assembly within one day.
The German Embassy garden staircase is one of the many heritage schemes for private and commercial clients Patalab has delivered in the City of Westminster. Further Westminster residential projects include Marconi House, Knightsbridge House, Clifton Hill House and Chandos Street.
The design and realisation of the staircase has been developed in close collaboration with StructureMode, and Christian Junge.
